Dr Paul Northway MBBS FRANZCP
Consultant Psychiatrist & Psychotherapist (adult)
Dr Northway is a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist and Psychiatrist with 18 years’ experience working in mental health and provides provides long-term psychotherapy within a psychoanalytic framework. Dr Northway’s therapeutic approach is to consult with patients on a weekly, or twice weekly basis in a long-term and relatively non-directive manner.
Dr Northway holds Bachelor of Medicine and a Bachelor of Surgery from the University of Melbourne, and a Master of Psychiatry from the University of Melbourne and completed his RANZCP Fellowship in 2010. Upon completing his psychiatrist specialist training, he completed a RANZCP Certificate of Advanced Training in Psychotherapy and has pursued additional training in long-term psychotherapy.
His psychotherapy practice is informed by a variety of theoretical frameworks, but particularly by the work of Carl Jung and subsequent developments in Analytical Psychology. This therapeutic approach emphasises the role of early childhood experience, trauma, and the unconscious mind in a range of difficulties such as mood, relationships, and identity, and how they influence present emotions and behaviours. This therapy approach involves creating a safe space to facilitate self-knowledge that enables personal transformation.
Conditions that may be suited to this approach include complex trauma, interpersonal difficulties, mood and anxiety disorders or personality difficulties. By delving into the roots of emotional challenges, Dr Northway aim to help individuals gain insight and healing from past experiences.
